Wine Review
The Story
The Malbec-Syrah was created as a later commercial and winemaking decision, with the goal of developing a blend in which both varieties enhance each other. The Malbec gives the wine its fruit, soft entry, and generous mid-palate, while Syrah brings spice, freshness, acidity, and a more persistent finish. The blend is approximately 60% Malbec and 40% Syrah.
This wine belongs to Funckenhausen's La Espera varietal line, made mainly from grapes grown in deep sandy-loam soils. These soils tend to produce aromatic wines with softer, less reactive tannins, so the winemaking approach is not to over-extract but to preserve varietal clarity, freshness, and drinkability. The result is a very gastronomic wine: less complex and structured than the reserve wines, but very expressive, enjoyable, and versatile at the table.
30% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 6 months, then blended with 70% unoaked wine — an approach that preserves freshness and vibrancy while adding subtle layers of spice, texture, and depth.
